本作 Metal Bird は、Eve Adams を名乗るLAのアーティストによる新作である。おそらく本作が3作目のリリースと思われるのだが、彼女に関する情報はあまり多くはない。以前の名義と思われる Scout では Neil Young らのカバーを披露しており、フォーク〜カントリーというひとつのルーツを垣間見ることができる。ともすれば雰囲気頼り或いはアヴァン頼りになりがちなこの手において、本作の落とし所は絶妙である。プロデュースを手がけているのは、カナダより新たな時代を牽引する Crack Cloud/N0V3L のメンバーである Military Genius（彼は以前から彼女の作品によくクレジットされていた）。昨年リリースされた彼の傑作ソロ・アルバム『Deep Web』で露呈したセンスと、更なる楽曲アレンジが過去最高にハマった結果、今すぐNumeroがコンピに収録してしまいそうなオーセンティック感を持ちながらも、Cindy LeeとCaretakerをバックにつけたJulie Cruiseのようなメランコリック・フォーク・バラッドに死亡。誰にも知られず自分だけの手元に置いておきたいほどに特別な未来の（現在でも）名盤。

それぞれの曲は地獄から天国へ向かう飛行機の中で書かれた詩のようなものです、暗闇から出てきて光に向かっていくような。
——— あなたのことは以前から気になっていたのですが、Googleに聞いても多くのことは教えてくれず、今回インタビューすることができ嬉しく思います。はじめに簡単に自己紹介いただけますでしょうか。
こちらこそインタヴューを受けることが出来てとても嬉しいです。ありがとう！私の名前は Eve Adams。カリフォルニアのアーティストです。
——— LA出身とのことですが、現在もLAで暮らしているのですか？
はい、そうです！
——— いつから音楽を作るようになったのでしょう。また、一人で作ることはあなたにとってどれくらい重要ですか？必須？それともそうするしかなかったから？
13才位の時に自分の部屋で音楽を作り始めました。18才で写真を勉強するためにモントリオールに引越してから、自分の曲を沢山レコーディングし始めました。これまでに自分ひとりでいくつかアルバムを制作することで、非常に多くの癒しと学びを得ることができたと思います。でも、次のアルバムはさらに手を広げて多くの人を制作に招き入れることを楽しみにしています。
——— 本作を聴いてJulie CruiseのFloating Into The Nightを想起しました。スイートで、ノスタルジックで、孤独で、少し狂気を感じるような。本作の制作にあたり何かテーマはありましたか？
ありがとうございます！ はい。このアルバムは、自分自身の檻の中で過ごした３年間の遺物です。私はまるでタロットの「吊るし首の男」のように、自分が宙ぶらりんになっているみたいに感じていました。それぞれの曲は地獄から天国へ向かう飛行機の中で書かれた詩のようなものです、暗闇から出てきて光に向かっていくような。
——— 本作はMilitary Geniusがプロデュースを手がけています。あなたの作品には以前から彼の名前がよくクレジットされていますが、彼や彼が所属するCrack Cloud周辺とは以前から親交があったのでしょうか？どのような経緯で知り合ったのでしょう。
Military Geniusと私は2015年のハロウィンに、Poisson Noirというという、今はないDIYスペースで出会いました。すぐにクリエイティブなつながりができて、以来彼は私の楽曲のレコーディングとミックスを手伝ってくれています。数年前、彼がCrack Cloudのメンバーに紹介してくれました。
——— あなたのインスタもそうですが、アートワークにも使われているモノクロの写真が印象的です。音楽と写真それぞれがお互いをよく表しているように感じます。ご自身で撮影されているようですが、あなたにとって音楽を作ることと写真を撮ることは本質的には同じですか？それともまったく別？また、好きな写真家がいれば教えてください。
ありがとう！ふたつのアートフォームは同じ根源から来ていると思います。あるアイディアは写真やビデオの形を望み、また別のアイディアは音楽の形を望むんだと思います。
——— いくつかYouToubeにあげているビデオも映画的です。好きな映画や影響を受けた映画はありますか？
ありがとう！映画で好きなのは「ブルーベルベット」、「市民ケーン」、「オズの魔法使い」、それと「デッドマン」です。
——— Scoutはあなたの以前の名義でしょうか。Neil YoungやMichael Hurley、Loretta Lynnがカバーされていました (https://eveadams.bandcamp.com/album/rawhide) 。フォークやカントリーはあなたのルーツのひとつかと思いますが、親が聴いていたりしたのですか？
モントリオールに住んでいた時に友達が、映画「アラバマ物語」からScoutというニックネームをつけてくれました。でも、モントリオールを離れた時にその名前は手放しました。
私の両親は私が育つ過程で Tom Waits や Rickie Lee Jones のような、彼らの世代の素晴らしい音楽を教えてくれました。私自身のフォーク音楽への敬愛は、14歳の時にローズボウルのフリーマーケットでボブ・ディランの「時代は変わる」を見つけたことから始まりました。私は完全に彼の音楽の虜になり、部屋の壁に彼の詩を書いたり、全ての曲を暗記したりしました。彼の音楽は若い女性であった私を完全に変え、それにより共感できる多くの詩人や映画監督を見つけることが出来ました。
——— 普段はどのような音楽を聴いていますか？最近のフェイバリットとオールタイム・フェイバリットをそれぞれいくつでも教えてください。
私は Jelly Roll Morton や、他のラグタイムピアニストの音楽を聞くのが大好きです。
でも、私のオールタイム・フェイバリットは Billie Holiday, Brian Eno, Cab Calloway, Daniel Johnston, Joni Mitchell, Laurie Anderson, The Caretaker, それに Feistです。もし無人島にアルバムを一枚だけ持っていけるなら、The Caretakerの「An Empty Bliss Beyond」を持っていくでしょう。
——— シンパシーを感じるアーティストやバンドはいますか？
私は Cab Calloway にいつも親近感を感じています。彼の音楽を聴いていると、まるで自分がコンサートの最前列にいるように感じます。いつも彼からデジャヴのような強い感覚を得ます。
——— 本作があなたにとってはじめてのアナログ・リリースになるかと思います。自分の音楽がレコードでリリースされることは少し特別だったりしますか？
ええ、もちろん！夢が叶ったようです。自分の曲をフィジカルで持つことはまるで小さな赤ちゃんを抱いているようでもあります。とても特別に感じます。
——— コロナウイルスによる脅威が未だに続いています。コロナによって何か価値観に変化はありましたか？変わったこと、変わらなかったことがあればそれぞれ教えてください。
このパンデミックによって、自分がどれだけ人々のことを気にかけているかに気付かされました。世の中がこのような状況になっているのをみていると、とても不安定になります。でも、それへの唯一の対抗策は愛を広げることと、できる限り人を助けることなんだと思います。
——— 最後に、今後の予定で何か決まっていることがあれば教えてください。
私はいま、次のアルバムと Metal Bird のビデオいくつか制作しています。

カリフォルニア、ロサンゼルスのアーティスト、Eve Adams。彼女の音楽は「密室で繰り広げられる暴力とロマンスが同居したダークなホームドラマ的フォーク・ノワール」と評される。歌詞で描かれている牧歌的な風景と繊細な人物表現には、ミニマルでありながら深い感情を持つ文学的な感性を示している。彼女の風変わりな民話は身近でありながらもシュールで、まるで幻影に取り憑かれたような魅惑的な世界を描いている。Eve Adamsの最新アルバム「Metal Bird」はリスナーを人生の限定的空間から聴覚的な飛行へと誘い、個人的逸話を織り交ぜながら人類の時を超えた重力との戦いを描いた感動的な物語を紡ぎ出す。

——— I was aware of your presence from before and was interested, although Google doesn’t tell me much about you. So, I am very pleased to be able to interview you on this occasion. At the first, can you introduce yourself briefly?
I’m very flattered to be interviewed. So, Thank You! My name is Eve Adams and I’m an artist from California.
——— You are from LA I heard. Do you still live in LA?
Yes, I do!
——— When did you start making your music? Also how is it important to you to make music on your own? Is that essential? or you had no choice?
I started writing songs in my room around the age of 13. When I moved to Montreal at 18 to study photography, I began to record a lot of my music. Making my last few albums on my own offered me a great amount of healing and space to learn, but I am really excited to branch out on my next album and have more people involved in the production.
——— I was reminded of Julie Cruise’s “Floating Into The Night” when I listened to this album. Sweet, nostalgic, lonely with a slight touch of insanity. Did you have any concept on compiling this work?
Thank you! And yes.
This album is like a relic of the three years I spent in my own Purgatory. I felt like I was in a state of suspension, like The Hanged Man of the Tarot. Each song is like a poem written on a flight from Hell to Heaven, emerging from the darkness and heading towards the light.
——— Military Genius produces this album and he has been credited to some of your work before. Did you know him and people around Crack Cloud that he is a part of? How did you come across with them?
Military Genius and I met on Halloween 2015 at Poisson Noir, a DIY space in Montreal that is no longer around. There was an instant creative connection and he has been instrumental in helping me record and mix my music. He introduced me to the members of Crack Cloud a few years ago.
——— The photography used on artwork is impressive, as well as your instagram. I think your music and the photography represent each other well. You take photography yourself it seems. Is it same for you essentially, to create music and to take photography? or is it totally different?
Thank you! I think the two forms stem from the same place. Some ideas just take shape in photographs or videos, and others want to be songs.
——— Some videos that you’ve released on Youtube are quite cinematic. Are there any films you like / are inspired by?
Thank you! Some of my favorites are Blue Velvet, Citizen Kane, The Wizard of Oz, and Dead Man.
——— Is “Scout” your previous artist name? Neil Young, Michael Hurley and Loretta Lynn were covered ( https://eveadams.bandcamp.com/album/rawhide )
I guess Folk and Country music are one of your musical roots. Do your parents listen to those?
My friend nicknamed me Scout when I was living in Montreal, because of the character in To Kill a Mockingbird, but I let that name go when I left that city.
My parents introduced me to a lot of great music from their generations when I was growing up, like Tom Waits and Rickie Lee Jones. My own love for folk music was born out of a trip to the Rose Bowl flea market when I was 14, where I came across “The Times They Are A-Changin” by Bob Dylan in a record bin. I became absolutely obsessed with him, writing his lyrics on my bedroom walls, and memorizing all of his songs. His music completely changed me as a young woman and led me to find so many other artists, poets, and filmmakers that resonated with me.
——— What music do you listen to daily? Can you tell us both your recent and all time favorite as many?
I love listening to Jelly Roll Morton and other ragtime pianists. But my all time favorite musicians are Billie Holiday, Brian Eno, Cab Calloway, Daniel Johnston, Joni Mitchell, Laurie Anderson, The Caretaker, and Feist.
If I had to take an album on a desert island I’d bring An Empty Bliss Beyond This World by The Caretaker.
——— Is there any artist or band you feel sympathy with?
I’ve always felt a kinship with Cab Calloway. When I listen to his music it just feels like I’m in the front row at his show. He always gives me this strange feeling of deja-vu.
——— It is your first vinyl release. Do you feel special that your music gets pressed on a vinyl?
Oh, of course! It’s a dream come true. Being able to hold all of my songs in a physical form is like holding a little baby. I feel very special.
——— The threat from coronavirus is still ongoing. Are there any changes in your value and beliefs over this crisis? Please, tell us if things have and haven’t changed.
This pandemic made me realize how much I care about people. Seeing the world in such a state of crisis has been very destabilizing, but I think the only antidote is to spread love and help others as much as you can.
———At last, what are your plans for the future, if any?
I am working on my next album as well as some music videos for Metal Bird.
